Building futures - The Remarkable Rebirth of Herning Højskole

The history of Højhuset dates back to 1961 when three enterprising brothers in the textile industry, the Damgaard brothers, decided to establish a folk high school for textile industry workers. Over time, the institution evolved into a general folk high school, Herning Højskole, with a focus on creative subjects. The school closed in 2007.

In 2016, the site was purchased by a private foundation with a vision to preserve the iconic building and continue the Damgaard brothers' legacy. Their goal was to create a place centered on spirit, education, learning, and community for the benefit and joy of many. This laid the foundation for a new chapter in the building's history, and on April 28, 2023, exactly 61 years after the high school’s official opening, Højhuset Kulturhotel (The High rise cultural hotel) opened its doors—the first of its kind in Denmark.

In a league of their own

Højhuset stands in a category of its own. As a cultural hotel, it redefines the conventional perception of what a hotel can offer. It combines unique hotel operations, rich history, high school spirit, community, sustainability, a cultural hub, and green agriculture.

The hotel features spectacular architecture, art, 58 single rooms, 23 double rooms, and 5 apartments, all newly renovated and decorated in a cohesive 1960s aesthetic, respecting the building's historical significance as a former folk high school.

A sense of community

Højhuset is a hub of art, culture, music, and communal events. It fosters a sense of community, whether on the hotel floors, in the fireplace lounge, lecture halls, or the cozy outdoor courtyards. The core values of the house are luxurious simplicity, warm hospitality, a relaxed atmosphere, and uncompromising sustainability.

Curious about what a “folk high school” is? It is something distinctively Danish.

A Legacy of Learning
